Vertical machining center
A vertical machining center (VMC) is a highly automated, multifunctional CNC machine with a vertical
spindle, tool magazine, and automatic tool changer. It's suitable for multi-process machining of complex
parts like plates, disks, molds, and small housings.
Definition and Working Principle
The spindle axis of a vertical machining center is vertical to the worktable. After a single setup of the
workpiece, the CNC system can automatically select and change tools, adjust spindle speed and feed rate,
and perform milling, boring, drilling, tapping, and other operations. It has at least three axes with two-axis
linkage, usually three-axis with three-axis linkage, and some models even support five- or six-axis control.
Main Features
• Multifunctional: Can perform milling, boring, drilling, threading, and more
• Highly Automated: Automatic tool changing and multi-axis linkage reduce the number of setups
• Compact Structure: Small footprint, easy setup and positioning, convenient for observation and debugging
• Precision and Rigidity: High-rigidity castings, short-nose spindle, and advanced control system ensure high
accuracy and stability
• Wide Material Compatibility: Can machine aluminum alloys, steel, hard alloys, and more
• Guideway Types: Hardened (for heavy cutting) and linear (for sensitive movement)
• Spindle Speeds: Low-speed (6000–15000 rpm) and high-speed (>18000 rpm)
• Bed Types: C-frame and gantry
Technical Parameters Example (XH716)
